HIStory: A Six Week Study of the Gospel of John

DAY 8 OF 40

“He Is Greater"

In this passage, John the Baptist is asked about why all of his followers are now following Jesus. John had a very successful ministry until Jesus arrived. John understood what his purpose was in life - to prepare people to follow Jesus. John declares, “He must become greater, and I must become less.”

How difficult is it to have this kind of mindset in a world where we are all clawing our way for more money, notoriety, recognition, and power? We live in a world of self-promotion, and the thought of becoming less is countercultural. Yet this should be the goal of every Jesus-follower, to make Him greater and us lesser.

What does it mean for you to make Jesus greater in your life?

What does it look like for you to become less so that God can be seen even more through you?

Pray this prayer today: God, I pray that you would have a greater portion of my life today. In moments when I want to promote myself, I ask you to show me ways to promote you. Help me to live a selfless life so that others will see you more than they see me!

About this Plan

HIStory: A Six Week Study of the Gospel of John

Jesus was more than just a figurative religious voice. He actually walked this earth as a man revealing to us the full nature of God. One of his best friends, John, took time to write down for us the account of his life, ministry, and teachings. This six-week study through the Gospel of John is not only history, but it’s also His Story.
