HIStory: A Six Week Study of the Gospel of John

DAY 10 OF 40

“A Father’s Faith" When Jesus returns to Cana, he is met with a royal official whose son was very sick and about to die. This father begged Jesus to come and heal his son. He figured that if Jesus could just touch his son that he could reverse the death sentence. Jesus challenged this father's faith by telling him that he wouldn’t believe unless he saw this sign for himself. But this father doesn’t give up. He asks again, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Perhaps it was the persistent cry for help that prompted Jesus to heal his son. Maybe Jesus saw faith beginning to swell up in the father’s eyes. The part of the story that brings faith to action in this father is where the scripture says, "The man took Jesus at his word and departed.” What faith it must have taken for this father to leave Jesus there in Cana and make the journey without him to Capernaum. However, he wasn’t going with Jesus, because he had Jesus’ words. Our faith does the same for us. Although Jesus isn’t with us today, His words can still be carried in our hearts. Our faith allows us to trust that Jesus is still able to move mountains in our lives, even if he isn’t visible in our situation. What situation do you have in your life that would cause you to persistently ask Jesus for a miracle? Have you given up praying for something because you haven’t seen the answer yet? What words of Jesus do you need to carry with you through your impossible situation?
