DAY 22 OF 27

Scripture

Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists. Jeremiah 51:18-19

Summary

It's crazy to think that people used to take gold, wood, or stone, carve a statue out of it and declare it as God. Or is it that crazy? The heart of idolatry is worshipping the creation rather than the Creator. Romans 1 talks about this in detail. Humans often choose to adore something in the created order rather than the One who created it all. There are thousands of different created things that people look to for fulfillment, purpose, or pleasure. But what is greater, a breathtaking sunset or the One who made the sunset? The answer is obvious. Everything in creation is meant to point us back to the goodness and greatness of God. Whether it's ice cream, art, or sex... each is a signpost toward a generous God. He is the one who deserves our worship. Let us not bow down to worthless idols, but only to the maker of heaven and earth.

Discussion Questions

1. What sentence stood out to you most from the summary? Why?

2. What are some things that are "idols" in our world today?

3. What do churches and worship teams "idolize" today? How can we combat them?

4. Are there any areas of your life that have overshadowed your love for God?

5. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?

Closing Prayer

God of mercy, heal us from our idolatry. Help us to see how you are the source of every good and perfect gift. Help us to look to you for our joy, our fulfillment, our purpose and peace. Forgive us for the many idols we have let become more important and more lovely to us than you. Restore our hearts. Make them new. Show us your glory and give us an unceasing hunger to treasure you above all else. We ask in Jesus' mighty name. Amen!
