I am that slightly frustrating person on the road who refuses to drive more than 5 miles over the speed limit. I’m sorry, I just value safety over speed I guess :) This has gotten me into a couple of funny situations in the past. As you can imagine, I’ve become the inspiration for several moments of “road rage!”
One of my favorite “road rage” moments was actually incredibly satisfying. I was on my merry way to the grocery store and had a driver become annoyed with my slow pace. He “zipped” around me in a rather reckless fashion and shared an aggressive hand gesture while doing so. I took it in stride and stayed at a safe speed, but I didn’t appreciate the interaction nonetheless.
This was when fate stepped in. Half a mile down the road I watched as a policeman lit up the same driver and pulled him over. I continued driving but slowed down just enough to catch his eye as I passed. I lifted up my hands and made a goofy face as if to say “huh, isn’t it interesting how that all worked out?” Pure satisfaction.
Unfortunately for my ego, this story is a rare example! Justice is often in short supply and as much as I see people try to create it in their own power, it’s just not the same as what God intends. This is why we’re called to trust God to be the ultimate judge.
When Hezekiah is faced with fear and helplessness in the face of Assyria, he turns to God for rescue. God follows through with a justice only He can serve. The Assyrians have no choice but to turn around and go home. But then, even when they’ve surrendered the fight, the King is murdered by his sons who take his throne for themselves. Ultimate justice.
I will praise God when His justice prevails in this life but I’ll also trust He is working even when I don’t see it. He already knows the end of the story and is turning what was intended to harm me into good! He is setting a table for me in the presence of my enemies. He is the God of justice and if we trust what He says, we can rest in the knowledge that He is always good.
