MŌRIAH - Am I Known, Seen, Loved?

DAY 2 OF 4

Trust

The truth is, the older we get, the less trusting we become. We've been hurt, betrayed, and disappointed. So, we start to believe that if we close the door of our hearts and get more selective with who we care about, we'll be immune to heartache and pain. But what if that's not true?

Lyric: I let go of my life, confidence in my guide. Hands up to the sky, free fall before I fly. (Credit: Moriah Smallbone, “Curtain Call” EP)

I felt that clear yet kind sting of conviction the day I read Romans 10:14, “But how can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust?” I've run hard into self-protection mode throughout my life. At first, I was afraid to trust in love. I thought that dating was too dangerous, so I refrained from giving my heart to anyone or anything. Those we allow to come into our lives most intimately will intentionally or unintentionally hurt us someday. But can we trust that God will be nearest to us in the midst of that pain? If we do, we are a bright light directing others in need to His love.

When walking in courage and humility, God often uses other people to show us how we can discover the treasures of empathy and kindness in our own lives. If you've been hurt or have hurt someone else, you might find it hard to trust anyone's intentions--including your own. As the weeping prophet Jeremiah honestly admits, "The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out" (Jer. 17:9). But we have the great privilege of trusting a good God to search our hearts and examine our minds, often through the presence and probing of other people.

Intention:
God, help me believe that you are trustworthy. You have full permission to use anything and anyone to refine my character.
