“MEAN” JESUS?
During dinner, a local woman sought Jesus’ attention and care. Jesus responded in a way that could be misinterpreted as mean or rude (v. 27). But Jesus was not attempting to insult the woman with this metaphor. In fact, he was testing her faith. He wanted the woman to consider what she felt about him: whether she thought he was merely another religious guru or he was the only way her daughter could be healed.
Matthew, one of the other Gospel writers, records Jesus’ response to this hopeful mother in this way: “Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment” (Mt 15:28). This wise woman understood the test and persisted in seeking Jesus’ help. Believers today can learn a valuable lesson from the faith and practice of this mother who cared enough to push the envelope, in faith.
Jesus, thank you for the example of this mother who had great faith in you. May I also have great faith in what you can do with very little. Amen.
