The Jesus Bible Reading PlanSample
TREE OF LIFE
The term “tree of life” is only found in three books of Scripture: Genesis, Proverbs and Revelation. In the Garden of Eden, eating from the tree of life granted immortality (Ge 3:22). Proverbs says that wisdom is a tree of life, and the New Testament reveals not only that Jesus is the wisdom of God (1Co 1:24) but also that he grants access to the tree of life (Rev 2:7). Proverbs 3:18, along with the rest of Proverbs, calls humanity back to paradise. Indeed, in the garden, humankind reached for knowledge apart from God and his Word. Humans sought to determine right and wrong for themselves. As a result, humans became unwise and inherited death — cut off from access to the tree of life. Proverbs reveals the path back to life — wisdom. But only in Christ, who is the wisdom of God, does that path become a reality for finite humans. If they will humble themselves and take hold of Jesus in faith, they will receive back what was lost in Eden.
Jesus, thank you for the completeness of Scripture. I humbly believe in you for all things, including an eternity with you in heaven. Amen.
