THE KING AND HIS BRIDE
The Israelite king described in this psalm is a king above many kings. He is well respected by the people and by God. He is described as the “most excellent of men” (v. 2) — one who makes his cause “truth, humility and justice” (v. 4), who always defeats his enemies (v. 5), and who establishes a throne that lasts forever (v. 6). All these qualities point directly to Jesus. He is the King of all kings, “exalted . . . to the highest place” by God (Php 2:7 – 9). Jesus is truth (Jn 14:6), the humblest man to walk the earth (Php 2:8), and his ministry and life constantly challenged people to live for God and pursue righteousness (Mt 5:6). God gives his people “victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Co 15:57). Jesus sits at the right hand of God and his throne “will last for ever and ever” (Heb 1:8).
Psalm 45 is a song of love — a royal wedding song that celebrates marriage in a grand manner — a wedding between a king and his beloved. The king is completely in love with his bride, and she is asked to honor and adore him (v. 11). This psalm prophetically portrays the glorious reign of Jesus — God’s promised Messiah and the final and ultimate King (vv. 6 – 7) — and how his church is his holy bride.
In his great and unfailing love, Jesus, the King over all, invites his church to become his holy bride, asking them to be ready for his return (Rev 19:7). The anticipation of a bride awaiting her groom as the wedding approaches is immeasurable. Months and months of preparation are spent on this one day. The bride is at her very best, with the best of intentions and expectations. Her heart overflows with joy, longing for her groom. This is an exact representation of how the church should be longing, preparing and eagerly anticipating the coming of King Jesus — singing and praying, “Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev 22:20).
Jesus, thank you for choosing the church to be your bride. Please help us to be ready for you when you come. Amen.
