DAY 123 OF 365

BUILDING PEOPLE AND A CITY

The rebuilding of Jerusalem was primarily a venture of spiritual restoration. This spiritual goal was achieved, however, with physical work. Likewise, the ongoing spiritual vitality of this rebuilt city would require the never-ending work of meeting practical needs. To that end, Nehemiah appointed gatekeepers to guard the city gates, as well as the temple, and musicians to lead worship in the temple (v. 1). To ensure the city’s security, Nehemiah appointed two officials, each with responsibility for half of Jerusalem (v. 2; cf. 3:9, 12). Additionally, citizens were to take turns standing guard near their own homes. Nehemiah, managing the details, ordered that the gates remain closed until well into the day (7:3). This would prevent sneak attacks at sunrise, the normal time for a city’s gates to be opened.

Jesus promised to build his church (Mt 16:18). Whereas the walls and gates of Jerusalem represented a defense against enemies, Jesus depicts his church as on offense, storming enemy territory. In this spiritual venture of building the church, Jesus’ strategy was to send his disciples out in pairs. The spiritual ministry of preaching and healing required dirty, well-traveled feet, as well as considering the physical necessities of food and lodging. Addressing these practical details, Jesus instructed them to stay in a home where they were welcomed and to eat and drink whatever was offered (Lk 10:1 – 12). Jesus’ practical strategy was used by the apostles and the early church as well, resulting in the expansion of the Christian faith throughout the known world.

Jesus, thank you for your wisdom in spreading your gospel and building your church. Help me to find more ways to get involved in the mission of expanding your church. Amen.
