THE HOLY SPIRIT

As we begin our devotional exploring the Holy Spirit, it's important to know that he has many aspects and ways of interacting with us. He is our divine helper, and is the Spirit of God with us here on earth.

The Holy Spirit did not suddenly appear on the Day of Pentecost - he has always been part of the eternal trinity. He is present in Creation hovering over the waters, he is present in the Old Testament anointing people for service, he is present in the Gospels working through Jesus- he has always been and always will be.

Because the Holy Spirit is a Spirit we can get confused and see him as a force or an impersonal being. The Holy Spirit has a personality, he has a character - he is co-equal, co-eternal with the Father and the Son. Although we often think of Jesus as Emmanuel God with Us, the reality is that now the Spirit is God with Us. He is the one who is present with us, filling us, guiding us, equipping us - to do the good works that we were created to do.

Sometimes theologians have called the Holy Spirit the Cinderella of the Trinity because he often gets overlooked. We have this season to focus on him and learn more about him. To know that he has always been present with the Father and Son. In so many ways the Trinity is a mystery - however, there is also much about the Trinity that we can know.

We believe in one God who exists as three Persons - Father, Son and Spirit. We believe this along with believers all over the world who have proclaimed it for over 2000 years.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters." - Genesis 1:1-2

Prayer: God, I pray that as we learn about your Spirit that he would become real to me in a fresh way. Holy Spirit I ask that you would reveal yourself to me as I learn about you. I thank you that you have revealed yourself to us as Father, Son and Spirit and that you have always existed this way. I am in awe of the mystery of who you are!
