Preparing Your Mama Heart

“What will contractions feel like?” “Will my baby be a good sleeper?” “What kind of mom will I be?” “Did I forget to add something to my registry?”… frequently, the beginning of our motherhood journey comes with many questions. The mysteries of what’s to come can overwhelm us sometimes, and the desire to have these questions answered, and feel as prepared as we want to be, feels like a burning fire! We also come in with expectations for how we hope everything will look and feel along the way. That’s a lot to carry around, mama!

As we prepare our hearts for mothering, our work is to release our expectations, preparations, and questions to the Lord. The beautiful truth is that God has already equipped us with everything we need to mother our child. Everything. There is not a single thing He is withholding from us. So while some of our questions may swirl around in our minds and consume us at times, God is the one who can settle them until the proper time. We don’t need to fret, buy every baby tool on the market in preparation, or overthink. He has graciously given us all of it!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

God’s path and His ways are unlike anything else we will find in this world. So rest easy that God’s got you. Pour yourself and your thoughts into becoming more like Him on this pregnancy path you are on. Seek Him, desire to know His heart for you and your child, and you will be equipped with every good thing to stay on His path for your life! His path is bright and well lit, with lots and markers and signs along the way that you are going in the right direction. But, unfortunately, there isn’t a baby gadget on the planet that can do that for you!

“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

If there is one tool for preparedness, it’s to wear out the pages of your bible. Then, let your mouth flow with prayers for wisdom and understanding, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and lead you on this mothering journey! God will give you all the insight you need for this pregnancy, your baby, and your little family.

“If the Lord does not build the house, it is useless for the builders to work on it. If the Lord does not protect the city, it is useless for the guard to stay alert.” Psalm 127:1

Mama, prepare your heart for your baby. The rest will follow. Cling to Jesus. Come to know Him, love Him, and spend time with Him. He is your biggest champion and cheerleader. He is for you. If God is for you on this path, who can be against you? All of God’s blessings to you, mom!
