Walking With Jesus (Ministry)

DAY 3 OF 7

Serving others

Mark 10:43-44

Naturally and instinctively, everyone wants to be great. We want to produce something great, and we want to be treated like great people. We make all kinds of efforts to become great people. The desire itself is not wrong because we can still be great and glorify God the Father in heaven.

The desire to be great can be a problem when someone tries to realize it by putting down and belittling other people. We hope that our wishes will come true, and those people will think that we are great people if we put others down and belittle them.

However, Lord Jesus stated something completely different from the way humans desire greatness. Greatness and fame are not achieved by physical achievements or material possessions. The key to being great is to be a servant. The key to being prominent is to be a servant. Yes, be a servant. This statement of Lord Jesus is surprising. While other people are competing to be great by belittling others, Jesus challenges all of us to be great by humbling ourselves. This is the essence of following Jesus or being a disciple of Christ. It is not worth following Him without a willingness to serve and be a servant.

We, who have a natural tendency to be honored by placing ourselves in a high place, should be willing to put ourselves in the lowest place. I believe that the battle within us is strong, and we may often lose the battle. We think that we only serve Him when we are in the church or fellowship. Our ministry and devotion seem genuine when we interact with others. We can see our real devotion when we face problems. We are still serving ourselves if we want to please ourselves by fulfilling our desires. We are still devoted to mammon if we only live after material pursuits. We are serving God when we always live to glorify the Lord.

Reflection:

1. How do you become great and prominent in life? Is it aligned with God's will?

2. What is the form of our ministry to God and others?

Practice: Serve one another with love.
