#Jesus22 - Daily Devotionals

DAY 20 OF 42

I think everyone knows the following situation from everyday life: two people are discussing COVID. They have different opinions. If you listen more closely, you realize that they are not actually talking to each other. Both have the feeling that they have found the truth, and they are trying to convince the other of it. They are not listening to each other properly. It seems as if neither has the willingness to understand the other. A classic discussion that would actually be better if it didn’t take place.

The question in such discussions: so, what is the truth?

I believe that we are all searching for the truth. But somehow, it seems that we are not capable of really having a searching heart. Instead, we adopt opinions that we like or that fit what we have been taught. We don't question ourselves because finding the real truth is just so complex. And when we do start searching, our thesis is reinforced thanks to modern algorithms. If there's one thing the Internet can do, it's spit out what we want to hear and see. This phenomenon does not stop at our churches either. An illusion of truth gives us security and a sense of belonging to a group that thinks the same. Just in the last few months, we have seen how different opinions can divide an entire society.

One of my biggest realizations over the past few years is that I don't actually know anything.

In our ICF culture, I love that we have the value of being lifelong learners.

In addition, it is important to remember that the foundation of your life is not knowledge and insight, but Jesus. The Holy Spirit softens and humbles our hearts. I don't have to fight for my truth, and I won't allow myself to become hard on others who have a different opinion.

In the Bible, Jesus is described as the truth. In this context, I love the word awe. Awe is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Awe means I know who God is and I also know that it is not me. God alone knows the objective truth and I am an imperfect person in an imperfect world. I depend on the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit.

ACTION STEP

On what issue has your heart become hard? Where are you clinging to your truth? Take a minute and hold out your heart to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to soften your heart again, and ask for His perspective.
