Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
When God is Quiet
“How long, Lord?” If you think this plea of David seems familiar, you’re right! This is a repeated theme that we saw in Psalm 6. Sometimes it can seem like God is on mute. It can seem like He has forgotten us and left us to wrestle with our thoughts and carry sorrow in our hearts alone. Some people would call this a “desert season” in our spiritual lives, and the good news is that everybody feels like this sometimes! Take heart today in the knowledge that you’re not the odd one out.
These seasons, though difficult, can be harnessed for great growth. With the right perspective, these moments can actually lead us into greater depths of relationship with God. They cause us to seek Him more persistently, walk by faith, and put our trust in Him. David lays out his petition to God in verse 3, “Look on me and answer, Lord my God.” We then witness an incredible transition: David goes from despair to hope and from distress to confidence in the final two verses.
“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.” (v. 5-6)
When God seems to be quiet, don’t pull away. Instead, seek Him even more. Persist in prayer, and trust in His unfailing love for you. In the waiting, rejoice in your salvation, sing His praise, and remember all the good that He has done in the past. He will do it again.
GO DEEP: Is your trust in God today? Will you continue to trust Him when it seems like He's not speaking? Make a list of all the good things the Lord has been doing in your life recently and refer back to it when He seems to be more quiet. Take some time today to rejoice in your salvation, praise Him, and thank Him for His goodness.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
