Basics of the Christian Faith

DAY 2 OF 13

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth…

The Lord God says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega. I am the one who is, who always was, and who is coming. I am the All-Powerful.” (Revelation 1:8, ERV)

“He is the God who made the whole world and everything in it.” (Acts 17:24, ERV)

The most basic belief of Christianity is the belief that there is a God. We can’t see Him, but He has revealed Himself to humanity in nature and in the Bible. He has always existed and will never cease to exist. Moreover, we believe that He is almighty, which means He is powerful to do what He wants.

The first proof of God’s power is the creation of heaven and earth. Everything came into existence according to His carefully designed plan: the earth, the stars, the sea, the plants, the animals, and man. Ever since, He holds everything together by His powerful command.

Knowing that God created heaven and earth answers the fundamental question where we humans come from. It also helps us understand the purpose of life: we were created for God’s glory.

There is one more important word in today’s statement: God is “the Father”. Tomorrow, we will see that there is also “the Son”, and later on we’ll read about “the Spirit”. God is tri-une, meaning He is one God consisting of three Persons. This is hard to understand, and the details are not included in this creed. But you should remember the basics: There is a God, He is almighty, and He has made the world. Do you believe that?
