Basics of the Christian Faith

DAY 4 OF 13

… who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary…

“The Good News is about God’s Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. As a human, he was born from the family of David, but through the Holy Spirit He was shown to be God’s powerful Son...” (Romans 1:3-4)

The belief in a tri-une God, who is one and three at the same time, is mind-blowing. What is even more amazing, is that the eternal Son of God became human. He remained 100% God, but also became 100% man about 2000 years ago. His ‘human’ name was Jesus.

Jesus was born of Mary. She was still a virgin when she got pregnant. When an angel announced her pregnancy, Mary wondered: “How will this happen? I am still a virgin.” The angel explained to her: “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High God will cover you. The baby will be holy and will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:34-35, ERV).

So, Jesus had a human mother and a divine Father. He was born in the city of Bethlehem, in very lowly circumstances. He was raised by his mother Mary and her husband Joseph. As an adult, He traveled through Israel and neighboring countries to teach people about God. People were attracted by His words and the miracles He performed, but they had a hard time grasping that this man was the Son of God. But He is, and this belief is an essential part of the Christian faith.

God the Son humbled Himself deeply by becoming human. What does this tell us about God’s character?
