Trust
Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding."
Some years ago, I had a person tell me, "I'm a self-made man. I don't rely on anyone for anything." What a prideful statement to make as this person was a professing Christian. But, to be honest, this person was a flat-out train wreck in life and not only had isolated himself but also had ruined most of his relationships with people.
I thought to myself, "If this is what leaning on our own understanding does, I don't want any part of it."
I consider myself a life learner and love to learn new things. However, I know enough to know I don't know everything. Therefore, I need God's wisdom, and I need Godly people around me to help me through life. Even though our verse says, "trust in the Lord with all your heart..." we don't. Our verse goes on to state, "and do not lean on your own understanding," which we do.
In verse seven, it goes further and says, "Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil." So, I would encourage you to read all of Proverbs 3.
In a culture where everyone paints themselves as "influencers," we lack the truest form of wisdom: God. We need to trust in God and then pray for wisdom and discernment so we may understand God's will for our life. Letting Him direct us in all situations would put us on a much better path than when I try to figure it out myself.
This wisdom is precisely what the Holy Spirit is there for, but we rarely speak with Him. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty good at talking myself into all kinds of things.
Pride is dangerous because it doesn't always show up like the self-made man in our example. Sometimes, it's subtle and weaves its way into our lives without us knowing it. It's why we need to pray for wisdom and discernment to always be on guard. It's also essential to have Godly people in our lives to help hold us accountable and give feedback with Truth and Grace.
Trust fully In God. Even our money says so.
Uncommen Questions:
1. Do you think you are a self-made man?
2. Do you pray for wisdom or lean on your own understanding?
Uncommen Challenge:
I challenge us all to realize that we are NOT self-made and need God in every part of our life. If you and I can't say we need God, we are prideful and need to reexamine our hearts.
