Uncommen: Heart ConditionsSample
Treasure
Matthew 6:21 "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
It doesn't take much investigating to figure out what we treasure. Our credit card statement says it all if we are not shouting it from the social media rooftops. All you'd have to do is go into someone's house and look in a closet at all the clothes, shoes, or watches. Or you could even look in the garage at the cars/trucks, bikes, guns, tools, or more. As our verse plainly says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
To set the proper context of our verse, let's back up two verses and include 19 and 20.
Lay Up Treasures in Heaven
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."
As you can see, God challenges us to change the focus of our hearts from the material to the eternal. But, unfortunately, that is nearly impossible for some people as they like their stuff. I've seen people shop for all kinds of reasons: guilt, depression, greed, selfishness, need, desire, status, excess of money, pride, and more.
I worked with a guy struggling to make ends meet, and one Monday, I asked how his weekend went. He said he and his wife were depressed, so they bought a $3,000 living room set. I asked, "because you were depressed?" He said, "yep!"
I know a person who has made it his life's goal to buy everything he can to fill that hole in his heart, from multiple high-end cars, yachts, guns, toys, guitars, four-wheelers, campers, and much more. But, unfortunately, he can't seem to satisfy himself with what he buys. So once he gets his latest "NEED," he's off to the next one.
I could make a list as long as your arm about how all of us chase the wrong treasure. Will there be things we want? Sure, and God knows that, but they become idols when we treasure those things more than God.
Most of the time, we don't realize we are doing this or justify it by saying things like, "I work hard for my money."
What if I told you it all belongs to God, and we may need to adjust how we use God's resources.
Uncommen Questions:
1. Do you purchase something in excess to compensate?
2. Do you treasure God more than all those things you spend so much money on for pleasure?
3. When was the last time you invested in your walk with Christ and the Kingdom of God?
Uncommen Challenge:
I challenge us all to take stock of where we place our focus, as that tells a story far more revealing than anything we say.
