I wonder if there’s a gigantic wall planner in heaven – an enormous chart that stretches for miles and miles and miles? On reflection, it would just be never-ending. We are talking about eternity here.

OK, so there it is – a massive timetable on display, with all the angels’ duties listed. Who is doing what, where they are being sent and when they should appear. Perhaps scripts are also provided… Humanly speaking, it would be a logistical nightmare of gigantic proportions. Just imagine organising thousands upon thousands of angels! Oh, I forgot. It wouldn’t be a problem. We are talking about eternity here.

‘What,’ ‘where’ and ’when’ aside, my question is, ‘Why?’ Why are angels sent by God to tell people stuff? Angels are supernatural beings who are God’s messengers. They are holy and majestic and reflect his glory and power. What an amazing way to communicate with humankind! How fitting that it was Gabriel himself who visited Mary with the news that she would become the mother of the Son of God! When the promised child was born, shepherds received an angelic visit as they tended their sheep – just imagine all those heavenly beings in the sky, praising God for ever! We are talking about eternity here.
