Women of Worth

DAY 4 OF 8

In this area of Scripture, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue. We see our Savior cure a disabled woman, crippled for eighteen years. Can we ponder together? Eighteen years is a long time. Nearly two decades spent struggling to do everyday activities others around her did with ease. I love that in the midst of His teaching, He offers her a loving invitation. Come to me. She heeds His call. He lays tender hands on her in the temple and says, “Woman, you are set free of your disability.” She immediately is healed and glorifies God. Those standing in the congregation erupt in amazement and rejoice at His miracle. The leader of the synagogue becomes indignant that Jesus had healed a woman on the Sabbath Day.

Jesus rebukes the hypocritical leaders by reminding them they’re inclined to take care of their livestock on the Sabbath, providing their animals with proper care and water to drink. Yet this man’s view of women was so cruel that he didn’t even think she deserved the same treatment as his livestock. Many held the perspective of women having little to no value. We don’t know this woman’s name, but the Messiah crowns her with dignity. He addresses her as “Daughter of Abraham” (Luke 13:16). This name emphasizes her belonging to the covenant community of the Kingdom. Jesus challenges both their view of women and their self-righteous hearts.

Reflection: What do these Scriptures reveal about the character of Christ?

Recognize: Is Christ inviting you to come to Him? Heed His call. Seek Him for your identity.

Respond: In light of the work of healing Christ has already done in your life, choose to walk in the newness of life, walk in dignity, make choices that honor and glorify Him.

About this Plan

Women of Worth

A good part of my life has been spent questioning my worth and my purpose as a woman. In my journey to discover my true identity in Christ, I went to the one place that would unravel the truth about me, the Word of God.
