AN OCTOPUS GARDEN
Gardens are for growing corn, flowers, and octopuses. Octopuses?! Well, sort of. Off the coast of California, scientists discovered a garden of octopuses—or octopi, if you want to be fancy about it.
In 2018, scientists were exploring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, using special underwater robots. That’s when they discovered an octopus garden, or nursery—the largest ever found! Over 1,000 female octopuses were brooding. (Brooding means taking care of their eggs.) Scientists wondered why they choose that spot. After all, it was over two miles deep where it’s usually freezing cold. That’s when scientists saw the shimmer.
You’ve probably seen the shimmer too. Maybe on a road on a hot summer’s day. It happens when the Sun heats the pavement, and the pavement heats the air around it. The warm air isn’t as dense as the other air. So when light passes through it, it bounces around, causing the shimmer. When scientists saw that shimmer in the water, they knew it was warmer there—probably because of an underground volcano. Instead of a frigid 35 degrees Fahrenheit, it was a warm 50 degrees, perfect for an octopus garden.
We may not be two miles under the ocean, but when we gather with those who love Jesus, we have our own shimmer of warmth—the love and presence of Jesus. That’s because Jesus promises that whenever two or more gather together to pray and praise Him, He is right there with us. So grab a friend or two, and enjoy the shimmer of being with Jesus!
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for coming to be with Your people. Help me soak up the warmth of Your love and share it with the world around me. Amen
