The Wonder of Creation

DAY 2 OF 7

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

“Boo!” your little brother yells as he jumps out from behind a door. You flinch in surprise. He falls on the floor laughing, but not you. You’re ready to sock him, run away, or both! What’s happening? That boo triggered your body’s fight-or-flight response.

When you get scared, your body gets ready to either fight off whatever scared you—or run away as fast as you can (flight). So, your heart pumps extra blood to your muscles and brain. You breathe faster to get more oxygen into your body. And the pupils in your eyes get bigger, or dilate (DIE-layt), to help you see better. All this happens so you can think better, move faster, and see the danger that’s coming at you. Your stomach even stops digesting, and you might even wet yourself. Don’t worry! That’s just because your body is choosing to focus on the fight or flight instead.

God gave us the fight-or-flight response to help us when we’re threatened. He also gave us His presence. That means that He’s always with us and helping us, especially when we’re scared—just like when David had to fight off lions and bears to protect his sheep (1 Samuel 17:34–36). David must have been terrified! But he knew God would help him. Chances are, you aren’t going to be fighting off bears or lions. But you might have to show your science project to the whole class, talk to a friend who hurt your feelings, or even stand up for what’s right. Don’t be afraid. Because whether it’s time to fight or take flight, God will help you.

Prayer

God, thank You that even when I am afraid, You are with me. I will trust You to fight my battles for me. Amen.
