Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the WorldSample
First Thought
As He crossed and recrossed the lake, Jesus demonstrated His power and authority through healings, exorcisms, control over nature, and His power over death itself. Returning to His hometown of Nazareth, people are first amazed at Jesus’s teaching, then questioning, then hostile. Jesus Himself is amazed at their lack of faith. For us, we notice that neither wise words nor mighty deeds will necessarily lead to faith in Jesus. For the disciples, this chapter marks a big moment when Jesus sends them off on a mission without Him, yet under His authority. It’s a good reminder that when we get involved in a mission, it’s Jesus’ mission, not ours. Getting involved in Jesus’ mission entails vulnerability, too. The disciples had little to fall back on in terms of provisions and possessions. A warm welcome and hospitality weren’t always going to be a given.
What Does the Bible Say?
Notice Jesus sends the disciples out in twos. Why do you think this was the case?
Living it Out
In what ways do you feel vulnerable and dependent in your ‘everyday mission field’?
Responding in Prayer
Sending God, thank you for sending me as your ambassador where I live/work/study/play. Help me share the good news of Jesus through all that I do and say. Today, I pray particularly for (…). Amen.
