DAY 16 OF 28

Power to Protect

Throughout the Bible, we see that God cares deeply for people who are vulnerable: the poor, orphans, widows, and foreigners. When he gave his law to Israel, he commanded his people to look after those who were marginalised or unable to support themselves. In other words, he wanted the people with power to care for those who had no power. They weren’t to take advantage of them, but to serve them.

In the New Testament, James picks up on this idea. He describes looking after orphans and widows – vulnerable people – as a vital part of following Jesus. Of course, Jesus himself demonstrated this in sharing the good news with many people who had no power: beggars, those with illnesses or injuries, social outcasts, and more.

When it comes to our own lives, we should be looking for ways to serve the vulnerable. This might look like giving money to charity or volunteering, but it can also be a part of everyday life. All around us, there are people who don’t fit in, who others reject, or who need help. Are you ready to serve Jesus by using your power to care for them?

Questions:

  1. In the passage from Deuteronomy, why do you think God commands the people who own fields not to go back for every last piece of wheat or fruit?
  2. Do you know someone who doesn’t fit in or who needs someone to look out for them? How might you show God’s love to that person?
  3. The world is full of people who are poor or vulnerable. What could you do to help them?

Prayer:

Generous God, thank you that you are a God who cares for poor and vulnerable people. When I feel distressed or down, please remind me of your love for me. Help me to be someone who uses my power to care for others as Jesus did. Amen.
