Before It Starts

DAY 1 OF 28

Who Am I?

If someone asked you to describe who you are, what would you say? You could talk about your hobbies or skills. Maybe you’d mention you’re a daughter or a son, a sister or a brother. You might even say where you live, where you go to school, what you believe, or what your dreams are for the future.

But maybe you have some other thoughts about who you are that you’re not so proud of. Are you unhappy with how you look or how you do at school? Do you feel trapped by your failures? Do you sometimes think of yourself as a bad son, daughter, or friend? Do you feel like you’re not always who you could, or should, be?

Our identity is made up of all sorts of different things from our lives, both good and bad. Yet God tells us that the most important part of our identity comes from somewhere else: from God himself.

Genesis says that we are all made in God’s image. How amazing is that?

It’s not what you can or can’t do, what you wear, who your friends are, how you look, or where you’re from that matters. Instead, you are valuable because the Creator of the world made you in his likeness. You have worth and dignity because God made you.

Questions:

  1. How should knowing that everyone has been made in God’s likeness change the way you see others as well as the way you see yourself?
  2. Has there been a time in your life when you felt worthless? How might you remind yourself that you are incredibly valuable to God?
  3. You can have confidence in who you are because you are made in God’s image. Who could you share this powerful truth with?

Prayer:

Dear God, you created all things. Thank you for creating me in your image. Help me to remember that I am precious in your sight. Please let that knowledge transform how I see myself and those around me so that I act in ways that show others that they are precious to you too. Help me to love them as you love me. Amen.
