Parenting “The Impossible Kid” With Love and Grace

DAY 4 OF 7

Are you frantically bouncing from one activity to another? Rushing, in fear of being late? Rushing and missing what’s in front of you?

I recently watched a video of Joshua Bell, one of the foremost violinists to ever live. As an experiment, he went to the metro station in Washington, D.C., and played for thousands passing by. Only one woman stopped to listen. Men, women, and children briskly walked past, underappreciating the beautiful talent.

Briskly.

Moving about.

Not noticing beauty.

Abundant life beckons you to slow down…stop…listen…be present.

One thing you can do every day is show up. This may be the most impactful parenting principle you can possess.

Keep your eyes on the finish line and on the Lord. A continual awareness of the end goal will renew your commitment for parenting with focus. As you peer into your little boy’s eyes, remember that one day he will be a man—a man who will make decisions and choices completely apart from you. As you hold your baby girl, remember one day she will pack up her stuff and move out of your house.

The first step to a lasting and impactful relationship with your child is—you show up! Be there for your child. Be present. Struggle with them. Cry with them. Learn with them. Grow with them. Stay engaged.

So many things keep us busy and out of touch with our children. Don’t ever underestimate your presence and love in your child’s life. It’s not about knowing all the answers—it’s about showing up.

Don’t miss it.

Don’t miss the journey because you’re too busy or wrapped up in things that don’t matter.

Take time to slow down and listen to the beautiful beats of the violin of life. Take time to laugh with your child. Take time to play with your child. Notice the most beautiful things about life and parenting.

Don’t briskly pass by leaving the blessings behind.

So what? Slow down and fully embrace the many blessings God has surrounded you with.

Dear God, thank You for the abundant life you have for me. Help me to fully show up for my kids and fight for time with them.
