Growing As A Mentor

DAY 4 OF 6

“Responsibility Of The Mentor”

Mentor’s Perspective:

There are multiple types of mentoring, but the type of mentoring I’m talking about has one goal…Jesus! The reason we encourage, build, and listen is to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus. Doesn’t this take the pressure off!?!? We don’t have to have all the answers. We don’t have to “fix” them. In fact, it’s not about us at all. It’s about helping our mentee walk in the freedom of Jesus’ truth and grace.

Here is one of the simpliest ways to point to Jesus…provide a place that the mentee can be themselves. A place that is all about them. A place to work out the confusion of life. This is the place where God will use and speak through you as the mentor. He will speak to them as you listen. He will bring clarity and awareness as you ask good questions. He is glorified when we encourage them to dig into His word for the truth.

You have an incredible opportunity to lead your mentee to a deeper place with Jesus. This is the goal we should always strive for. This is the goal that will change their life forever!

Mentee’s Perspective:

The greatest gift you can give is a safe place. A place to open up our hearts, laugh when we need to, cry when we need to…to just wobble out all life’s stuff. We want to trust you, and we will. As a mentee, please let us share when we’re ready, and don’t give up on us if it takes a while to get there. Once that safe place is established, I promise you the floodgates will be open.

Thank you for your kindness, patience, and for that safe spot. Now, once we’re in the groove with you, please don’t be afraid to push us and ask the hard questions. We crave transparency from you and ourselves. And know this - you’re doing a much better job at mentoring than you think!

About this Plan

Growing As A Mentor

What’s your reaction to the word mentoring? “Scary!” “I don’t know enough!” “What is mentoring?!?!” Mentoring can be confusing and scary, but it can also be one of the most life-changing relationships we have. This plan, written from the perspective of a mentor and a mentee, will encourage you that you do have what it takes to influence others through mentoring.
