What If I Mess Up Again?
Welcome to the human condition! Since the beginning of the faith, followers of Jesus have done their best to take up their crosses, deny themselves, and follow Jesus. But along the way, we have stumbled, tripped, and fallen short. Yet every time we do, God’s forgiveness and grace meets us there.
This is the beauty of grace. The calling we’ve been given is so significant and so important, and God absolutely expects us to play a part in it; but at the end of the day, He’s the One who is going to bring His plans for redemption to completion.
So, when you mess up, practice repentance. Admit you’ve messed up and commit to making a change. Return to God. Every time you do, He will receive you with open arms.
One of the most powerful pictures of God’s grace and what repentance really looks like is found in Luke 15—the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
In this parable, we’re shown how God responds to repentance. Not with condemnation and judgment, but with open arms and forgiveness. If we ever find ourselves living like we’re walking on eggshells, so afraid of messing up that we trade one harmful thought pattern for another, then we’ve completely misunderstood the power of the gospel and the character of God.
The gospel proclaims that anyone who puts their trust in Jesus can be rescued from their sin, reconciled to God, and restored to their rightful place as partners with God. The gospel promises that anyone who is in Christ has been made new, no longer defined by the sin and the shame of their past, but now defined by Christ living in them.
The God we serve is the God revealed through Jesus. The God who left heaven and entered history to become the Suffering Servant and the Lamb who was slain. He is a king who sacrificed Himself for His people instead of sacrificing His people for Himself. The God we serve is a God who lifts up the humble and humbles the proud. He is a God who cares deeply for the last, the least, and the lost. And this God chooses to respond to our confession with His forgiveness and to our repentance with His redemption.
He has invited every single one of us to know Him, trust Him, and follow Him. That invitation doesn’t get revoked when we mess up. When we mess up, we’re given a fresh opportunity to receive God’s relentless grace and radical forgiveness.
