Good Work in Progress
For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself.
1 Samuel 12:22 (ESV)
The people of Israel demanded a human king to rule over them just like their neighboring nations. They forgot that the Lord was their king.
God was not pleased when His people forsook him for a human king. Yet the prophet Samuel said that the Lord would not forsake His people because it pleases the Lord to make the Israelites a people for Himself.
Our God is a good father who always thinks of good things for His children. Even His discipline is for building up and not tearing down. Jesus says that the Father prunes the branches so that they will bear fruits. God is determined to make us a people for Himself and we are all His good work in progress.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You that Your love for us is eternal and You are determined to make us a people for Yourself. We pray that we will grow in our intimacy with You and to experience Your love deeper every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
About this Plan
The book of First Samuel describes Israel’s transition from theocracy to monarchy. God granted the Israelites’ request by asking Samuel, the last judge, to anoint Saul as king while warning them of the cost of a monarchy. Due to Saul’s disobedience, God resolved to replace him with David as the successor. Saul’s life gives us an important spiritual lesson: to obey God is better than to sacrifice for him.
