Summer Vibes | Draw Close to GodSample
How do we get to know someone better? If we want to get to know a boyfriend or a girlfriend better, a spouse better, a friend better, we probably try to spend more time with them.
So how do we get to know God better?
James, the brother of Jesus, tells us to “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”
While that sounds pretty simple, if someone were to ask us how to get closer to God, how would we answer?
Maybe you’d say you need to go to church and listen to a pastor more. Maybe you’d say you need to find a mentor or someone to teach you. Maybe you’d feel like you need to take some kind of a class.
But it’s not nearly so complicated, according to James! In fact, it’s super simple. God wants us all growing in our relationship with Him – so why would he make it complicated?! We should all have a goal of growing in maturity in our faith! It’s something God wants for all of us – because it’s good for us AND because he wants us to help others in finding that good, close relationship with Jesus, as well!
The author of Hebrews says it this way:
“You have been believers for so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.”
Wow! That just cuts deep! Because sometimes we get so ‘familiar’ in our faith walk, we forget about the basic stuff that keeps us close to God in the first place! Things like praying on the regular, reading our Bibles consistently, even memorizing scripture!
So over the next few days, let’s check out a couple of ways to get to know God a little bit more!
