Walk Fit. Walk Worthy.

DAY 2 OF 3

Our Character

I couldn’t wait to turn 16. That age signified a step toward independence. It came with the right to drive and the ability to get a job. I earned my first paycheck at a fast-food restaurant in Kansas. I took orders, received payments, and presented customers with their meals with a smile. During downtimes, I cleaned counters, threw away garbage, and took serving trays back to be washed. I practiced the Midwest work ethic, “a good worker stays busy.” Looking busy showed industry and strong values.

My Midwest work ethic falls short of walking worthy of Christ. He is not asking us to occupy ourselves with busywork until He returns. Instead of busywork, He wants purposeful work that BEARS fruit.

Paul and Timothy prayed for God’s holy people in Colossae to “walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.” There are two key components of walking worthy in Paul and Timothy’s prayer:

1. Bearing fruit in every good work.

2. Growing in the knowledge of God.

We cultivate fruit-bearing work as we grow in the knowledge of God. And as we grow in our knowledge of God, we bear fruit. This is not busywork. This is a cycle of productive, purposeful work used to develop our character as we walk worthy of Him.

Prayer Walking: As you walk, consider where you are in the fruit-bearing process. Ask God what areas of knowledge still need tending. Pray and walk. Walk and pray. Our prayer walks bear fruit as we become stronger physically, emotionally, and spiritually all for His glory!
