Love God Greatly: In the BeginningSample

The family line of Adam, specifically through Seth, displays the realities of life and death. Among all the names on this list, Enoch is the only one whose relationship with God is mentioned. Not much is said, only that Enoch walked with God. It is not specified for how long or in what ways Enoch walked with God. But Enoch’s life looked drastically different than anyone else on earth. Enoch did not die, but instead, God took him away. 

Enoch’s life stands in contrast with the others mentioned in Seth’s line and those mentioned in Cain’s line. Unlike Cain’s descendants, Enoch walked with God. Instead of pursuing wealth and status like Cain’s descendants, he sought the Lord. He also stands out among Seth’s descendants because of his commitment to God. 

Genesis 5 brings us face to face with mortality. Even though the people mentioned in this section lived much longer than we can imagine living today, they still died. No matter how long and full their lives were, they still faced death. Except one. Enoch’s life stands apart because of his walk with God. Through Enoch’s example, the author of Genesis tells us that everlasting life is only found in a relationship with God. 

When we have a fuller understanding of our mortality, we are better able to see what does and doesn’t matter in life. God’s Word and the souls of people are the only things that will last into eternity. Our days are not long, but they can be marked by fullness when we walk with and worship God. 

Prayer:

Lord, help me understand my mortality. My life is only a blink from Your perspective. Help me remain faithful to You as I live my life. I want to walk with You the way Enoch did. Show me what it means to have a heart and life committed to You each day. Amen.
