What’s most important to you? If you had to choose just one thing, what is it?
In this passage, a rich man comes to Jesus and asks him what he needs to do to inherit eternal life. He had followed all the commandments, done the right things, but Jesus said there’s something you haven’t done yet - sell all your stuff and give the money away. And the man walked away.
Jesus knew that the rich man had something that was getting in the way of his relationship with Jesus. The man wanted all the benefits that Jesus had to offer, but he also wanted to hold on to everything he wanted.
Jesus said you can’t have it both ways. Jesus wants to be your top priority.
In fact, in Mark 8, Jesus said, “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.”
Is there anything holding you back from fully following Jesus?
Here are a few steps you might take to put Jesus first in your life:
- Wake up earlier than you want to so you can spend time with him
- Rearrange your schedule even though it might be inconvenient
- Give up something you really enjoy because it’s distracting you from Jesus

About this Plan
As followers of Jesus, one of the best things we can do is look at Jesus’ life and learn from him. Join us as we look at one of the biographies of Jesus - the Gospel of Mark. Each day has a suggested reading, but don't let that stop you from reading the entire chapter!
