Let There Be Light: Devotions From Time of Grace

DAY 5 OF 6

Let there be animals

There is almost no place on earth where God’s animals haven’t found a way to thrive. They’re everywhere! Day 5 was the day when God made animal creatures that could go where humans can’t--he made creatures with wings that could defy gravity and soar and dart through the air, and he made creatures with fins and tails for rapid swimming and gills to extract oxygen from water. “God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky’” (Genesis 1:20).

Should we be surprised that a God who is generous, a God of abundance, should have made so many of these flying and swimming creatures that the very air and water teemed with them? That exuberant abundance characterized God’s entire creative week, and it has characterized his continuing creative activity ever since. He commanded them to be fruitful, i.e., reproduce like crazy, filling the water and skies.

So elegant is God’s design of his air and sea creatures that engineers who dared mechanical flight and sailing carefully studied birds and fish to see how they do it. Read a little on the history of heavier-than-air flight to see what people learned from bird’s wings about the concept of “lift.”

Oh, by the way, isn’t it a joy also that many of the birds and fish are so tasty?
