Let There Be Light: Devotions From Time of Grace

DAY 4 OF 6

Let there be sun, moon, and stars

Day 4 saw a massive demonstration of God’s unlimited power and brilliance. There was now a universe full of stuff surrounding our planet! “God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years’” (Genesis 1:14).

Our sun--source of warmth and light, God’s chosen instrument for replenishing earth’s energy, driver of the solar convection cycle that moves water around and up, powerful gravitational pull that keeps earth and the other planets slinging around in their elliptical orbits, marking the passages of our years by our orbit and the passing of our days by its rise in the east . . .

Our moon--just a very big rock ball orbiting around us but with wonderful reflective ability, bouncing the sun’s light back to us in pale white beams, a lesser light marking out our months with its crescents, using its own smaller gravitational pull to move our tides in and out, in and out . . .

Our stars--oh my, the stars, each one a sun, so unbelievably far away that their light takes manymanymany years just to reach us, billions of stars in billions of galaxies, glittering above on a clear night, moving on a set track above us each night but predictable enough to guide navigation for those wise enough to study them . . .

When you have the slightest, teeniest doubts about God’s power, wisdom, and love, go outside and look up.
