NEVER GIVE UP!
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Wilma Rudolf was born prematurely in 1940 in a remote place in Tennessee, America. Wilma is the twentieth child of 22 siblings who were brought up in a very poor family. When Wilma was 4 years old, she experienced a severe sickness. Because her family was poor, they waited a long time to finally send her to a doctor. She suffered from several early childhood illnesses, including pneumonia and scarlet fever, and contracted infantile polio virus at the age of four. She recovered from polio, but lost strength in her left leg and foot so that she had to use a crutch to walk. The doctor said that she would be crippled all her life.
However, Wilma’s mother was an incredible woman of God who kept supporting and encouraging Wilma not to lose hope. At the age of 9, Wilma told her mother that she wanted to learn to walk without crutch. Her mother kept motivating her and praying for her. At the age of 13, Wilma could finally walk normally without any supporting tool. The doctor who saw it said it was a miracle.
Wilma dreamed to be a great runner. She kept joining one race after another, until she finally won a race. She joined the Olympics and managed to win 3 medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.
What we can learn from the story of Wilma Rudolph is that challenges and problems may come our way, but we can be strong and not give up. How? By putting our faith and hope in Jesus. Let’s trust Jesus, the source of perfect joy and peace.
Jesus will make us more than conquerors because He has overcome the world.
