“TMI”
Online discussion boards, social media groups, and parents’ interconnectivity through their smart devices prove that we have more access to information (professional and amateur) than any generation before us. While this seems good, it is a direct threat to our peace. We are continually reminded of how much we have to fear.
The dangers today might not be any more dangerous than they were a century ago, but they are hands down a hundred times louder. The worst threat to modern motherhood might not be anything our children face. The worst danger might just be what this deafening din of potential doom is doing to the hearts of today’s mommas.
In our quest to make sure nothing bad ever happens to our kids, something truly tragic has happened to us. We have sacrificed our emotional and mental well-being on the altar of protecting our children. Fear has convinced us to pay close attention to every warning out there, and we are worrying ourselves sick because of it.
We hear that knowledge is power, and it’s true. But information in fear’s hands is dangerous. We are losing sleep at night, rest in our days, and peace in our spirits all in the name of being good parents. And it’s causing us harm.
Momma, we both know that the Word tells us no one gains anything by worrying. You know you won’t add to your children’s lives by worry whether they’re going to be okay.
Jesus reminds us of this truth in Matthew 6:27 (NIV): “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” But friend, we can add vibrantly to our kids’ lives by praying for each of their days and inviting the Lord to come close and help us with each one.
The world is dangerous, but God remains on the throne.
Father, when fear or anxiety tries to remind me just how dangerous the world is for me or for my children, help me drag those tormenting distractions to the cross, where I can point and say, “That is where Jesus overcame everything I would ever face. That is where He pledged to help me. That is where He promised to love and protect not just me but also my kids.” Amen.
