There's Hope For Today

DAY 352 OF 366

The mid-fifties computer guy sitting in 27F proved to be an easy conversationalist. We talked of common roots in the Northeast and summer vacations on the lakes of Maine. We eventually got around to careers.

When I tell people I’m a pastor, they get chatty, quiet, or intense. He got chatty. “Let me tell you, this is a low day for me,” he said. “I’ve been down here for a new system training course. I didn’t get my certification. I don’t know what I’m going to tell my boss.” He was amazed that young people seemed to have an immediate grasp of the new technology. He struggled with his inability to adapt from his “mainframe” roots to a whole new computer culture. I tried to encourage him: “You’ll pick it up. It’s just new to you now.” He readily agreed, but I could see the doubt behind his eyes. A two-week training course had pushed him firmly into the mid-life maze.

Rules change. Career tracks spin. Pace increases. New today is obsolete tomorrow. We need something fixed and solid. We need an anchor point so that changing winds don’t blow us away. We need the “unshakable” in a world that quakes in uncertainty. He is the fixed point of all creation. Bind your soul to the Changeless One.
