There's Hope For Today

DAY 320 OF 366

With no more than 3½ years of training, Jesus is going to leave the scene, commissioning His disciples with the daunting task of taking the Gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Does He choose deep-water sailors, explorers or frontiersmen? Does He choose diplomats and politicians who can stand tall in the halls of power? How does He shape His team? Surely He will search the great cities, looking among the schools of learning for the best and the brightest.

You might think that He would draft twelve men with the pedigree of Paul; men of breeding, men of letters, men of action. What strategy should one employ in trying to build a team that will change the world? Wisdom calls for a broad search … but no! Jesus goes home to a backward region, far removed from the halls of power of Jerusalem. He reaches down into Capernaum, Bethsaida, and Cana.

All of the disciples were plucked from this rough collection of Galilean hamlets and fishing villages, with the exception of Judas Iscariot. The choosing of the twelve disciples sends a message across time that common people need to hear. It’s not about us – it’s all about Christ in us.
