There's Hope For Today

DAY 261 OF 366

The movie actress was afforded every courtesy by the talk show host. She was pushing her new book on relationships, and he was doing his best to coax an intelligent statement from her collagen-enhanced lips. She had become an expert on relationships by tanking three of her own marriages and wrecking one or two more.

She spouted a mix of cliché and psycho-babble, admonishing us to love ourselves and accept the reality that few relationships last forever. She had learned to “follow her heart.” A few more husbands and a couple more books will probably earn her an honorary doctorate and guest appearances with Oprah and Dr. Phil.

Following our hearts almost always leads to disaster. Jeremiah warns us not to follow our hearts. We need guidance that transcends our emotions, finding roots in principle and truth. We need to choose our paths according to right and wrong, not desire and circumstances.

The actress prattled on about her road to enlightenment, spinning pop psychology and hedonism into one great and confused web. How sad that today’s experts rise not out of lives well-lived, but rather from a catalog of self-induced horrors survived.
