There's Hope For Today

DAY 186 OF 366

“I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!” said Patrick Henry. His words have retained their brilliant luster amidst the tarnished relics of a post-Christian culture.

There is, in the heart of every man, a yearning to be free. To take away one’s freedom is our favored mode of punishment. Its threat is the greatest deterrent since our moral base went on life support. We brace ourselves against all attempts to fence us in.

Some see their marriage covenant as a ball and chain. Libertarians seek the dissolution of all laws except those that keep us from violating the rights of others. Modernists within the church argue for an updating of all Biblical themes to loosen restrictions and better reflect a permissive culture. Limits and restrictions are under attack on every quarter.

We want to be free! But can we be free without limits? Can we truly have liberty without law? Can we have law without absolutes? Within the framework of our faith we have both law and liberty; commandment and creativity; boundaries and bounty. Unframed liberty gives way to uncontainable chaos.
