There's Hope For Today

DAY 173 OF 366

The years pass too quickly. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was wrestling my way out the door with two car seats, a booster, and a tandem stroller? Wasn’t it just yesterday that life was play, and play was cheap? Wasn’t it just yesterday that a boy caller was a wrong number, and all three girls could fit in my lap, and bedtime was 8:30 with lights out?

Now, I’m a taxi driver, answering service, and a twenty-dollar bill dispenser. We need a revolving door, a full-time scheduler, a clothing consultant, and driver’s ed. It seems that I never see a quiet Friday, a night with everyone home, or change from that twenty.

It’s the suddenness of it all that unnerves me. I don’t think I’ve missed a thing, and yet I feel that something’s sneaking up on me. It’s a big truck with a bumper sticker up front that says, “Get Out of the Way, Baldy!” I used to be able to leave that truck in my dust, but lately, he seems to be gaining a little.

Life is a vapor, and time never pauses to catch a breath. Kids grow up and out and you wake up one morning wishing you had taken more pictures, and appreciated the exquisite joy of having your baby fall asleep in your arms. We need to live and love now, lest tomorrow holds regret instead of joy.
