There's Hope For TodaySample
Bedford, England houses a wonderful museum to the life and work of John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress. With the exception of the Bible, Bunyan’s great work has been translated into more languages than any other book in history.
Dr. Ravi Zacharias was visiting the museum and made the following comment to the lady at the front desk: “Isn’t it amazing that a simple little book from the hands of a mender of pots and pans has won such world-wide acclaim?” Zacharias was floored when she confessed that she had never read Pilgrim’s Progress. She was directing people through a museum built to remember a book she had not read.
I don’t find it so shocking as did Dr. Zacharias. I am surrounded by Christians who gladly point others to the general goodness and veracity of Christianity, only to admit that they haven’t read all of the Book. The percentage of Christians who could not walk a seeker through a biblical path to salvation is embarrassing; even tragic.
Our biblical illiteracy limits our effectiveness and invites the scorn of bankrupt ideologies. God has placed a Sword in our hands, unrivaled in its power, beauty, and craftsmanship. Should we not learn to wield it well?
