Ain't No Devil Gonna Tread on Me

DAY 3 OF 5

I have always been fascinated by Matthew 4:1-11 when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. It’s bizarre to think that even God experienced the cunning temptation of the devil and the strong influence of the kingdom of darkness. Jesus literally knows how we feel when lies come, temptation comes and darkness floods in all around us.

It’s interesting that in Matthew 4:1 it says that the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness so that Satan could tempt him. Jesus did not just find himself lost or was not being punished for something he did wrong. This passage shows that God is not afraid of Satan. He lets him test us because He knows it will clarify our purpose and mission.

What did Jesus do when temptation came? Even in His weakness, His hunger and His pain, He spoke God’s Word. He reminded His heart of what is lovely, what is good, and what is true. He reminded Himself of His purpose on earth - to crush the head of Satan and to save us from our sins.

There’s a line in the bridge of this song that has become an anthem for me when I feel the attacks of the devil. “No weapon formed against shall prosper, in Jesus’ name.” This comes from the scripture in Isaiah 54:17 - “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me.” It’s interesting because the line right before this verse says, “And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc” (vs. 16) BUT “no weapon forged against you will prevail.” I think sometimes when I feel attacked, when I feel the threat of the kingdom of darkness and when I hear lies whispered in my ears; I feel that God must be punishing me, He has forgotten about me, or he has forsaken me.

In reality, God is holding on tightly to me and He won’t let Satan win. He is using the temptation of the devil to sanctify, refine, and reveal my purpose and mission, just like Jesus experienced in the wilderness. We know that our Savior never expects us to go somewhere He hasn’t already been. Because He took on flesh and felt everything we feel, and resisted Satan’s temptation with the Word of God, we can too. Because our God has defeated the devil, he has no more power over us, in Jesus’ name.
