Abiding in the PsalmsSample
Whom Shall I Fear?
There is so much to unpack in this psalm and we are going to use the first verse as a key to open the rest. For David there are two distinct realities which he knows to be true. One reality overwhelms the other. David knows his enemies are against him and the reality of their military advance towards him. David also knows the reality of a God who is his light and salvation, a God who is the stronghold of his life.
David does not fear the threat of what can be taken from him by war, because what cannot be taken from him is far greater; he already has salvation. While the strongholds of his battle may be defeated, the stronghold of his life remains. We see David’s response in verse 8 is to continue to seek God’s face no matter what is before him.
So often the reality of the troubles of this life can cause us to take our eyes off God and live in worry or fear, yet the model we are shown in this psalm is to keep our eyes on God, continue to seek His face and trust in Him no matter the trouble or circumstance we face, as in God there is light, salvation, and mercy. It seems David goes even further and is inspired by trouble toward devotion, toward God.
