Turn Around and Go to Jesus
There is a saying that “Nothing good happens after 2 am.” Some of us have been in situations that attest to the truth of this saying. We know staying out late can mean trouble.
In the book of Samuel, we learn about a time when King David was supposed to go to war. Instead, he sends Joab and his officers out while he stays in Jerusalem. Do you know what happened next? One word: Bathsheba. David should have been at war, but instead, he was on his porch and somehow saw Bathsheba showering on the rooftop. David was in the wrong place, and it led to murder. If you don’t know the rest of the story, I encourage you to finish it in the book of Samuel. The point is that David was in the wrong place just as Judas went to the wrong people to have Jesus killed.
At the wrong place, you can end up doing the wrong thing. Judas went to the wrong people and betrayed Jesus. David was at the wrong place and he committed adultery and murder. Your surroundings are important. When you make decisions, are you in the right place? Not just physically. Are you in the right place emotionally? Mentally? Spiritually?
Mary of Bethany, the noble woman who poured the expensive perfume on Jesus, was exactly where she needed to be. She was at the feet of Jesus, anointing Him. You want to be where God is. He is everywhere. But we can lose intimacy with Him when we journey into places we should not be. If you are lonely and cannot sleep at night and find yourself struggling with lust, your computer is not where you need to be at midnight. If you are dealing with addiction to alcohol and get into a bad situation, you do not need to be near a bar.
Mary of Bethany was exactly where she needed to be, but Judas was where he shouldn’t have been. How many opportunities do you think Judas had to turn around? At every step leading to that betrayal, he had an opportunity to stop and make the right decision. Have you ever been headed towards sin and you know with every step you need to quit? Turn around and get out of that situation!
If you are going the wrong direction and making bad decisions, stop and turn around. This is a word of God for you. Repent and go where Mary of Bethany was: at Jesus’ feet. Go to Jesus.
