7 Days of Experiencing God’s Infinite GraceSample
Less is lovely
LORD, You alone are my portion and my cup; You make my lot secure.
Psalm 16:5
We live in a supersize world of buy-one-get-one-free-with-an-extra-side-of-chips. Size counts. If we’re not aware and intentional, we can quickly get trapped in the consumerist cycle of believing more is better.
God owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). That doesn’t mean we need to own them all too. He’s a well-resourced God in every way—which just means you can trust Him to give you your allotted portion. Before every meal, treat or temptation, I try to pray: Choose my weight; choose my plate. I try to trust God to provide for my needs, lending me wisdom to take only what I need and share generously. Maybe we could pray like that when we shop for clothes, cars or décor too? Our God is Jehovah Jireh. He provides. He knows just what you need, and He knows just how to spoon out a satisfying abundance.
Food for Thought: Portion distortion.
Sometimes the problem isn’t what we eat—it’s how much. Even healthy foods have calories—which contribute to weight gain! A Frisbee-sized piece of fish isn’t going to make your skinny jeans more comfortable. Massive restaurant and supermarket portions also distort our ideas about healthy platefuls. You might leave a nouvelle cuisine restaurant still feeling peckish. But chew on this: the French are amongst the skinniest in Europe. They’re definitely on the right track when it comes to smaller portion sizes.
