The Distress of Idolatry
Acts 17:16-17
“While Paul was waiting for them [Silas and Timothy] in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.”
The battle for the hearts and minds of people occurs in the spiritual, unseen realm, the realm of ideas and the realm of physical behavior. Paul was in anguish of spirit because the Holy Spirit within him was grieved at the idolatry and bondage of the people of Athens. Paul was moved to proclaim the gospel to religious Jews, God-fearing Greeks and in the marketplace. The battle for the hearts and minds of people in every city in every nation requires prayer as well as the proclamation of the gospel.
Are we grieved by the worship of inanimate objects (like money, cars, homes and beauty), rather than worship of the living God?
Will we boldly live and share the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever we go?
Lord Jesus, keep my heart sensitive to your Spirit’s conviction and discernment of idolatry in my life and to those around me. I choose to live and proclaim your gospel of freedom this day.
