“Even on the Gentiles”
Acts 10:45, 46
“The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.”
The generosity of God to extend his salvation to the Gentiles astounded the circumcised Jewish believers. They had a long history of exclusiveness and a covenant with God that they were not interested in sharing with others. The Holy Spirit’s anointing, gifting and evangelism (speaking in other languages) was the sign of God’s global mission heart. God is still reaching those who we might have excluded from his covenant community. The danger for the Church is that we become more limiting than the God we serve. In our devotion to God we forget that we are all sinners saved by grace. Our standing before God is dependent on no works or merit of ourselves.
Father God, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit and your salvation call to every tribe, language and people.
