The Enemies’ Deception
Ezra 4:2, 4
“When enemies of Judah…heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, they…said, ‘Let us help you build…Then the peoples around them set out to discourage…and make them afraid to go on building.’”
When we set our hearts to building the temple, committing our lives to worship and sacrifice to God, we will hear from the enemy. In Israel’s story, the enemies first tried to interfere with the rebuilding process by acting like allies and supporters. Not all good offers come from God. When this duplicitous offer to help was refused, the same people sought to discourage and instill fear in God’s people. The spiritual warfare that a follower of Jesus faces can come as an angel of light or as an intimidating frontal attack. Both are meant to undermine our faith and effectiveness. We need God’s discernment and guidance as we devote our lives (a living temple) to God’s glory.
Jesus, may you be glorified in my life this day. I pray for discernment about the enemy’s attacks on my life, so that your kingdom will be done.
